David HuronThe Ohio State University (Music) Size Matters: An Intermodal Story About Faces and Voices Liberman Room (BOUS 160) Friday, October 24, 2008 4:00 PM Cognitive Science Colloquium Series Abstract
Why does a toothy smile signal friendliness rather than aggression?
Why do tenors play the role of operatic heroes? Why do lions have
manes but cheetahs don't? Why do pianists frown when performing
with their left hand? Why do Chinese women undergo risky operations
on their vocal chords? Why do we describe pitch in terms of high and
low? What makes Betty Boop sound cute? In this presentation, I
offer answers to these and other questions by interpreting a broad
body of classical and recent experimental research.
BIOGRAPHY:
David Huron is Professor in the School of Music and the Center for
Cognitive Science at the Ohio State University. Originally from
Canada, Huron completed doctoral studies in musicology at the
University of Nottingham in 1989. In addition to laboratory-based
research, his activities have also involved field studies among
various cultures around the world. His most recent book is
"Sweet Anticipation: Music and the Psychology of Expectation"
published in 2006 by MIT Press.
